It blows my mind to think about how my style has evolved over the years. I cringe when I look back at some of my very first blog posts. I started this blog in high school so you can imagine. I’m 23 now but even when I first moved to Chicago for college, my personal sense of style was completely different.
I didn’t know how to dress to best flatter my body. I thought I did but I didn’t. Until just a few years ago I had always thought that I shouldn’t wear longer dresses because I’m short and it’s unflattering to hide my legs. I wouldn’t have been caught dead in a dress that went past my knees ha! Now, I live in longer dresses when the weather warms up. They’re so comfy and easy to wear – especially on windy days in Chicago. Easy to dress up or down, and super flattering. And, there’s no need to shave my legs. I could go on but the point is I don’t know how I ever lived without long dresses.
Something else I got wrong was refusing to wear heels with a lower heel height. Again, I thought short girls need higher heels and only old ladies wear those lower, more comfortable heels. Now I know that barely there heels are sophisticated and I can walk in them for hours without my feet bleeding. Although I do occasionally wear a higher heel.
There’s so much more than I’ve learned but I think one of my most important discoveries was high-waisted everything. High-waisted jeans, shorts – or a dress that flares out at my natural waist like this one – do wonders to extend my legs. Since I’m short and I have a longer torso, high-waisted clothing makes my legs appear longer. And on the other hand, anything that cuts at my hips makes me look shorter and bigger.
