A new season and change in weather always inspires me to purge my wardrobe. I constantly get rid of things that I no longer love around my apartment. I find that cleaning and clearing clutter also helps to clear headspace.
I have been a Rent the Runway Unlimited subscriber for more than two years now. I have definitely splurged on a few pieces I love, but for the most part, I have been renting all of my clothes for the last two plus years. And the longer I use Rent the Runway, the more stuff I get rid of.
Here are a few rules that help me get rid of things I don’t wear:
- If I get something new, I get rid of something else in the same category. 1 for 1. This applies to everything I own – not just clothes. If I get a new pair of jeans, then goodbye old pair of jeans. If I get a new coffee mug, I throw away one that’s old and gross.
- Turn all of your hangers to face backwards to keep track of what you actually wear. As you wear items, put them back so that the hangers face forward. At the end of a year or even a few months, it will be obvious what you need to purge.
- Ask this one question: If you had the perfect occasion/event to wear this to tomorrow, would you want to wear it? This is what I ask myself each time I’m hesitating to get rid of something that I haven’t worn in a while. Often the excuse is “Ok, I haven’t worn this dress in a year BUT it would be perfect if I got invited to a wedding on the beach (or insert whatever occasion).” But really think about it… if you were invited to that wedding and it was next week, would you actually wear this dress or would you go shopping for a new one? There’s your answer.
Treat yourself to a few new pieces after you purge. Or rent an endless stream of new clothes like me. This bright orange dress is available from Rent the Runway. I love wearing long-sleeve dresses.
I was sad to return this Coach Parker bag back to Rent the Runway after using it for a few weeks. I really considered purchasing it and still might. It’s the perfect size and goes with everything. You can purchase it directly from Coach too. The price is not too bad considering the quality and versatility.
